Shop 103: Math for Young Builders

Math!? Ew.

Not so fast! Students will discover how math comes to life in construction, focusing on the practical application of adding and subtracting fractions to build precise measurements. Through hands-on projects, they’ll learn the math concepts that are essential for real-world building, such as cutting materials to size, calculating area, and adjusting measurements. This class bridges the gap between abstract math and tangible skills, helping students understand how fractions play a critical role in creating structures, from floor plans to furniture.

Shop 101: Bird House

Apes build nests, too!

Students will design and build species-specific bird houses tailored to the needs of Maine’s native bird species, such as Eastern Bluebirds, Chickadees, and Tree Swallows. As they construct their homes, they’ll dive into the behavioral and ecological importance of birds in maintaining forest health.

Shop 102: Bat Box

What's hanging out in the forest?

This class delves into the important role that bats play as keystone species in maintaining healthy ecosystems. 

Students will leave with their own bat box, understanding the crucial ecological role of bats in preserving forest health and connecting conservation, craftsmanship, and ecology.
