Toolbox: What do tools do?
We're gonna build a toolbox! Students will learn to use basic hand tools and practice shop safety through hands on demonstrations of measuring, cutting, and assembly from plans. Each student will build a custom toolbox to carry forward into subsequent classes.
Class Syllabus
Goals:
1. Establish proficiency in hand tool use and safety protocols in shop.
2. Instill confidence to read and execute end products from plans.
3. Provide lessons in wood species identification, local and situational ecologies, and environmental awareness.
4. Create and foster a safe environment for all ages and abilities to learn new skills.
5. Connect students to Maine forest ecology through a history of wood
Day 1:
Students will learn the purpose and application of basic hand tools: tape measure, speed/combo/framing square, hammer, pull saw, screw driver, chalk line, and appropriate safety gear through the concepts of Square, Plumb, Level, and Straight.
Students will learn a short history of the Maine timber industry, and to identify tree species by leaf, bark and grain in preparation for selecting the live handle for their toolbox.
